A Tripura court recently sentenced a Haryana man to 14 years of rigorous imprisonment in a Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) case.
The court also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh, failing to pay which the convict will have to undergo an additional term of six months.
The convict, Harpal Singh, 51, is a resident of Sonipat district in Haryana.
According to the judgment order released on January 16, a team from Mungiakami police station seized 456 kilogram of dry cannabis from a 12-wheeler vehicle and arrested the driver, Naveen, 39, and co-driver Harpal Singh on April 6, 2022. A suo moto complaint was lodged at the police station on the same day under Section 20 (b) (ii)(C)/25/29 of the NDPS Act.
Thereafter, the investigating officer submitted a chargesheet in the Additional District and Sessions Court, Khowai against the two accused on July 31, 2022.
The court order said the strict punishment was given to deter others from committing such crimes.
Naveen is currently absconding, so the court has reserved the hearing on his sentence.
